Prep to Year 3 Big Day Out

Congratulations to Ms Randell, fellow staff, parents, community volunteers and Yr 7 students for making the u/8’s Big Day Out such a wonderful and enjoyable experience for all our children and their families.  The range of activities, special guests and community displays were outstanding.  Hard to believe we squeezed all this in plus a BBQ lunch on the day.  Our children are very lucky to have such an enthusiastic and caring school community supporting their education.

Yr 2/3 Plants

The children of Yr 2 and 3 worked hard to beautify the gardens outside their classroom. Using plants donated by Bunnings they learnt how easy it is to grow a wonderful garden.  Visits by Scientist Sue gave the children an insight into the different bugs that attack plants.

Year 4 and 5 Bike Education

On Tuesday and Wednesday 4G went to Bike Ed. First we practiced being camouflaged.  Then we got onto our bikes and split into two groups. I went into Sam’s group.  Then we practiced mount, balance, power. Balance means put your right foot onto the right pedal.

On Tuesday we went to Bike Ed.  At bike ed our teachers were called Mary and Sam.  When we were there we learned about “hook turns”.  First you have to mount your bike and then wait for the green light.  When the light is green you ride straight ahead, then pick the bike up and place it around the corner.

Prep and Prep/1 Wet Wednesday

Recently our Prep, Prep / Yr 1 and Special Needs students enjoyed a morning learning about their senses.  The children participated in various rotations designed to enhance their fine motor skills and sensory perceptions.  Lots of hands on experiences were used to compare textures:  such as goop, cold spaghetti, hair curlers, paint, bird seed, wet potato etc. whilst being blindfolded.

Yr 2/3 and 3 Excursion to Bakeries and Sugar Shed

As part of their unit on “Where does food come from” the Year 2/3 and 3 classes went on an excursion to local bakeries and the Sugar Shed.  The children learned about the processes used for making bread and buns.  The bakers allowed the children to ice their own finger buns and make hot cross buns.  After lunch the children then were taken on a guided tour of the Sugar Shed.  The shed provides an insight into the production of sugar using scaled down copies of the actual sugar milling process.  The children were able to see the sugar cane plant harvested and then processed into sugar.

YEAR 2/3B AND 3J’s EXCURSION

Early Wednesday morning, Mrs Becker’s and Mrs Jeston’s class went on an excursion to a bakery and a sugar mill.  We visited Baker’s Delight and Brumby’s at Canelands to see how bread is made.  We also visited the Sarina Sugar Shed to learn about how sugar is also made.  First we hopped off the bus and walked through Canelands to out bakery.  3J made hot cross buns and 2/3B iced sticky buns.

After that we climbed back on the bus and drove to Sarina.  We ate our morning tea in the park so we would have energy to continue.  Following that we entered the theatre and watched a movie about sugar cane.  The tour guide Mary later showed us the big machinery used to cut cane.

Last of all we ate our big lunch under some mango trees.  It was then time to go back to school because it was getting late.  We extremely enjoyed our excursion because it was interesting and we all had fun.

After seeing how some of the food that we eat is processed the Yr 2/3 and 3 classes decided to make their own bread.

Yr 4/5 & 5/6 Water Treatment Excursion

As part of their unit on the “Water Cycle” Years 4/5 and 5/6 visited the water treatment plant, where they learned all about how Mackay’s water is treated and sent to our homes.  The classes had lunch at the Botanic Gardens where they also were shown many different varieties of plants that are drought resistant, thus enabling them to use less water.

OUR EXCITING EXCURSION
On the 5th March 5/6O and 4/5S went on an excursion to the Water Treatment Plant and the Botanical Gardens.  At the Water Treatment Plant, Ian took us for a tour around.  We learnt that the 3 reservoirs near Mt. Pleasant hold 54 million litres all together.  By accident Ann Kelleher dropped her hat in the water clarifier.  Then Alison gave us a booklet and we had a quiz.

Once we finished at the water treatment plant we went to the Botanical Gardens and had lunch.  Dale came out and we received a booklet and had a tour around the gardens.  We found out a lot of interesting facts.   Fun was had by all.

Year 6 and 7 Excursion to Earth Quest Exhibit

This term Year 7S and 6E classes went on an excursion to the Gordon White Library to have a look at the Earth Quest Exhibit.  The two classes split into two groups.  One group was observing and interacting with the exhibit, the other getting a guided tour of the enormous Library by the lovely Natasha.

The exhibits included: a demonstration on how a Volcano erupts, how mountains are formed and a lot more fun stuff.  The tour was very informative and we found out some things about the Library that we hadn’t known before, such as the fact that in the Young Adults section, there is an X-box 360.

Everybody enjoyed the excursion and we were very happy to come back to school.
